AU-Michigan was formed in 2004 to address the rise of the Religious Right in Michigan politics. We favor no political party or political movement over another. From a core membership of 10, we’ve increased our numbers to over 3000 dedicated and knowledgeable activists.
We are Christians, Jews, Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims, Secular Humanists, Atheists, Wiccans, Democrats, Republicans, Greens, Libertarians, students, lawyers, clergy members, factory workers, teachers, store clerks, nurses, doctors, at-home workers, retirees...in other words, citizens from every walk of life and from every region of Michigan. The one thing that binds this diverse group together is our profound commitment to religious freedom for all citizens – the right to believe or not to believe unmolested by the raw power of government and the personal agenda of politicians.
We are watchdogs for religious freedom, reporting abuses of our constitutional guarantees to our home office for possible litigation.
We act on abuses of church and state separation through lobbying, letter writing, emailing, phone calling and speaking at legislative hearings, school board meetings, and city council meetings. We do everything we can do to right the wrong.
We educate and persuade through tabling at various events, through our Speakers Service, and through our participation in AU campaigns like First Freedom First and Clergy Outreach programs.
We form partnerships and alliances with like-minded groups (and sometimes not like-minded groups) to better serve the struggle for religious freedom.
We don’t waste time or resources. We strongly believe that words without meaningful action are often empty. We are activists first, “philosophers” second.
